Marcali - The introduction of the city

- Marcali is about 10 kms away from the M7 highway, therefore has a good position concerning transport;
- Marcali is located 15 kms from Balaton on the Marcali-Ridge in Inner-Somogy. The city is approachable from all directions: from North to South it is crossed by the road 68 which goes from Balaton all the way to the border (Barcs);
- According to the Development Program of the Infrastructure Networks, a new two-digit highway is going to be constructed which would cross the area of Marcali, further improving the city’s accessibility;
- You can get to the city from Öreglak from the East and from Zalakomárom from the West. You can reach the capital Budapest, the regional centre Pécs and county capital Kaposvár by bus without transfer;
- The area of the city is 101,5 km2 and its population is 11.840 according to the status of 31st December 2013; with that it is the third most populated city of Somogy county after Kaposvár and Siófok. The population of the city is close to 4% of the county’s population. The Marcali region contains 38 settlements and has a population of 37.000;
- As the centre of the region, Marcali has an extended network of institutions. Aside from the inhabitants of the city and the region, there are a significant number of people who use the medical, educational and administrative services. The settlement is still the region’s economic, trade, administrative, medical and cultural centre;
- The rate of people having a college, university or other diploma in Marcali is 11%, which is 18% of the economically active population;
- The rate of people who have a professional diploma without secondary education and graduation exam is 21%, which is 33% of the economically active population;

- The most important businesses and industries:
- Industrie Elektrik Kft. employs the most workers today, mainly women (approximately 70%). The company was founded in 1990 and is completely German-owned. It manufactures cables for cars and for household products which are sold abroad (Germany, France, Belgium, USA);
- ZIEHL ABEGG Kft. has been founded in 1995 and has become one of the largest employers. It has a parent company in the German sister city Künzelsau, producing and distributing fans and electronic engines worldwide;
- in 2008 Videoton Rt.’s sole property the VT EPMA Zrt. appeared as a new venture facing dynamic growth;
- companies in the industrial sector primarily deal with building industry services, such as structural engineering, road constructions, road maintenance, sidewalk constructions and other civil engineering projects. Their production activities consist of producing mixed concrete, curbing, carpenter- and locksmith industrial products;
- the Marylla Kft. produces fashion-, sport- and schoolbags. Aside from the domestic market they are exported to Austria, Germany and Belgium;
- the woodworking industry has old traditions in Marcali. It processes oak, tan, ash, alder and pine timber. Their products - building wood, leafed timber, parquetry, furniture rods, logs, etc. – aside from the domestic market are exported to Germany, Italy, Austria, Sweden;
- there is a tradition of grain industry in Marcali. Grain is stored in Concordia Rt.’s reinforced-concrete silo (which is the tallest building of Marcali);
- the dairy industry, after several ownership changes produces Mizo products. The country’s market leader dairy product company Sole-Mizo Zrt. has a factory in the city;
- the Marcali Agráripari Rt., as the largest agricultural producer does not own land, instead works on a rented area of 3200 hectares. 1800 hectares of this area are fields where corn, wheat, barley, beet, oat, sunflowers are grown;
- Among the population it is common to keep swine and rabbits. There are 250 beekeepers in Marcali and in the surrounding areas. Balatoni Halászati Rt. and other individual renters deal with fish farming in local lakes;
- The air of the city of Marcali undergoes a great deal of pressure due to the proximity of Balaton and the traffic of road 68, however the large green areas and the north-western wind keep the air relatively clean;
- To this end in 2014 there is going to be a bypass to the road 68 so that traffic going through the city and noise can be reduced;
- The karst water of Nyirád provides the water supply of the city. The supply of drinking water is permanently solved and its quality is appropriate;
- In the past years the channel system of the city has been almost 100% complete with the exception of two parts of the city Gyótapuszta and Horvátkút, therefore the quality of the surface waters has improved significantly;
- Selective waste collection is solved by several selective waste collection points throughout the city;
- Sewers provide 95% of the city. Within the frames of the South-Balaton wastewater project a new wastewater plant with new modern technology is going to be built, moreover the channel system in Horvátkút is going to be finished in 2014.
